Current Research
Mian Chin has served as Principal Investigator for many research projects since 1997 that involve global and regional modeling of tropospheric aerosols and chemistry. She and her coworkers have developed the Goddard Chemistry Aerosol Radiation and Transport (GOCART) model, which has been used to simulate tropospheric aerosols and related gas species, CO, and radionuclides for climate, air quality, and global change studies, with a spetial focus on analysis of satellite and sub-orbital observations. Current (as of February 2015) active projects include:
- Interactions between Asian air pollution and monsoon system - A multi-scale modeling and analysis (PI, NASA ACMAP)
- Decadal variations of aerosols in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere: Trends, source attributions, and the role of deep convection (PI, NASA Aura)
- Effects of volcanic eruptions on climate and environment - A global model study with satellite data constrained source functions (PI, NASA TERAQ)
- Advancing Coupled Land-Atmosphere Modeling with the NASA-Unified WRF via Process Studies and Satellite-Scale Data Assimilation (Co-I, NASA MAP)
- Enhancing CALIPSO's capability of measuring above-cloud absorbing aerosols and assessing aerosol long-range transport and radiative effects through A-train integration (Co-I, NASA CCST)
