Most of these plots show a color-coded image background of some physical quantity which is labelled in the leftmost column above. A color bar scale on the right of the image shows how the quantity values map to the colors. Superimposed on the image is a depiction of the horizontal flow field as blue streamlines with arrows marking the direction of the flow. The thickness of each streamline indicates the wind speed, according to the legend at the bottow left. Where the physical quantity is a vertically cumulative variable that does not describe a single vertical level (e.g. CAPE), the pressure level indicated in the title is that of the flow field. Continental outlines are shown as thin white or yellow lines.
